About this lecture

Why can a Formula One car corner at speeds that would throw a road car off the track? This lecture builds the answer from the forces on a car in a turn: friction must supply the pull a corner demands, and friction is capped by the normal force. Downforce raises that cap without adding mass. We see where it comes from, through inverted wings, Bernoulli's principle and ground effect under the floor, then work a numerical example showing how much faster a corner can be taken. Finally we weigh the price, drag and lost top speed, and see why teams tune downforce track by track and why it matters for braking and stability.
